Jul 26, 2025
Sofia [Bulgaria], July 26: Bulgarian authorities have seized around 380 kg of marijuana destined to be sent abroad, and arrested four suspects, the Prosecutor's Office said on Friday.
About 200 kg of the illicit substance was seized in a van, which was stopped for inspection on the road from Sofia to the town of Sliven. The marijuana was vacuum-packed in plastic bags, each weighing one kilogram, and placed in a total of 10 cardboard boxes.
During the investigation, eight more boxes of marijuana weighing approximately 180 kilograms, also packed in plastic bags, were found and seized in a warehouse in the town of Yambol.
The drugs seized had an estimated court value of 7.6 million BGN (4.6 million U.S. dollars), the Prosecutor's Office said, "and at street prices, twice as much."
The marijuana was not intended for the Bulgarian market, but was supposed to be transported to a "neighboring country," it added.
The seizure represents one of the largest drug busts in Bulgaria this year.
An investigation is underway.
