US administration report spells out China policy

May 22, 2020

Washington DC (USA), May 22: The administration of President Donald Trump has released a report claiming that China poses challenges to US values.
The report, "United States Strategic Approach to The People's Republic of China," lays out Washington's approach to the country. It was released on Wednesday.
It says China is engaged in an ideological competition with the West by portraying its governance system as functioning better than those in Western countries.
It says Beijing's efforts under the leadership of President Xi Jinping challenge the American belief in the right of every person to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
The report accuses China of harming vital US interests by expanding its use of economic, political and military power.
It declares that the US administration has adopted a competitive approach to respond Beijing's challenge.
On defense, it says the administration is aiming to deter Beijing by prioritizing the modernization of the US nuclear triad, in which the weapons can be delivered from land, sea or air. It also says the US continues to urge Chinese leaders to join arms-control talks, so that miscalculations can be prevented and costly arms buildups avoided.
The report also says the US has significant interests in the future of Hong Kong, where a large number of US citizens and businesses reside.
The report recognizes that the engagement policy of past US governments was misguided.
The report underscores rising tensions between the world's two largest economies.
