Washington DC (USA), June 4: Judicial authorities in the US state of Minnesota have charged all four former Minneapolis police officers in connection with the death of a black man in police custody.
The four were at the scene of the arrest in the city last Monday. During the arrest, one of the officers pinned the man to the ground and kneeled on his neck for several minutes.
The former officer who kneeled on the man's neck had already been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter over the death.
On Wednesday, prosecutors charged him with a more serious count of second-degree murder. They say they found new evidence that supports the stronger charge.
Prosecutors also charged the three other former officers with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and manslaughter.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison stressed that they will deal with the matter based on the law. He said he doesn't think one successful prosecution can rectify the hurt and loss that so many people feel. He called on all people and institutions to make persistent efforts to rewrite rules for creating a just society.
